Polar bears are actually more and more becoming threatened due to many issues featuring industry activities, ice in their natural environment melting, as well as human aspect. By far the largest root cause is actually the change in the natural environment of the polar bear. Countless life-threatening conditions are produced for these cold climate bears when the ice melts. Global warming that is tied to industrialization and activities such as driving a car, burning coal, and additional human ventures generates the ice melting.
The Bear Basics
Polar bears are actually a big varieties that make their homes on the frozen Arctic sea. The bears will certainly waste the majority of their lives on the ice. Males can grow up to ten feet in duration as well as weigh in at over 500 kg! The bears are actually carnivores, suggesting they include mostly on a diet made up of the meat of additional Arctic animals. At current there are estimated to be only 20-50,000 polar bears left in the wild. They are actually on the Endangered Animal List.
Why They’re At Risk
The ultimate prospect to the survival of the polar bear species is the noted warming of the Arctic ocean which is actually leading to the melting of the ice these bears call residence. Although the bears use the ice for breeding and resting as well, it’s crucial element is to provide a cover for the bears as they hunt seals. Without adequate ice, the bears can easily not expand a long way enough from land to hunt sufficient food to thrive. The bears are emerging as malnourished as well as several are dying of hunger. This dynamic is effecting female bears by having cubs in a wonderful amount causing lower survival prices of the newer generations. Added risks to polar bears consist of escalated run ins by having humans due to the forced time spent on land, and spills, development as well as freight methods relating to oil in the Arctic.
Intervention in the form of authorities controls to lessen human impact has been highlighted as a concern in America and additional countries. In addition, exclusive businesses and interest bunches continue to lobby and work with the government to defend this valued animal in its natural habitat. Apart from government interference, further research concerning global warming is actually important so that the temperature change are able to be actually stopped or reversed. There are actually agencies that are actually raising money for this extremely purpose. Another way communities are aiding the polar bear is to use qualified bear patrol agents to keep the land bound polar bears from individuals as well as to make certain that the bears are not competing as well really by having the folks for the food resources on land.
You can get involved in the quest to save the Arctic Polar Bears by performing immediately with the World Wildlife Fund. Start the gratifying quest today by seeing Polar Bears at World Wild Life.
My subject matter pertains to the extinction of the species. How many species of animals throughout the earth? become extinct say every day, month or year? How come we only hear of the polar bear, the whales, the panda bear, gorillas, elephants, etc. all generally zoo animals and nothing of other species? For example, the lowly skunk gets run over by cars almost everyday but no one cares. Come to think of it zoo animals generate revenues and thus are protected from extinction. Also “comfort” animals such as cats and dogs are also protected not because of kindness to these animals but rather because they give much “cozy. cuddly” comfort to the owners.
Yes but the skunk isn’t going to be wiped out any time soon – it has a sustainable population. The reason we hear about polar bears, gorillas, whales, etc is because these are animals that are having a hard time sustaining their population due to habitat loss, poaching, etc. Zoo animals do not generate enough revenue to protect their wild counterparts. If they did – the passenger pigeon never would have went extinct. In fact, the last bird died IN a zoo. If you can’t effectively breed the animals in a zoo (e.g., Whales) then it is very hard to offer a solid conservation effort that will really help in the long run. They are doing the best they can, but it’s contributions and entrance fees to the zoo that help them afford these efforts in the first place.
I couldn’t give you a number. No one can because we don’t know the current populations up to the minute. But I can tell you that 99% of all species that have ever lived on this planet are now extinct.
Sasha has it right. the penguins will get mighty upset. you might note that nothing in the arctic that polar bears eat, spends any time far from water. if whatever it is cannot jump right in, it’s dinner. penguins won’t stand a chance. unfortunately.
It could be if warming trends continue, but on the other hand, it could be bad for all parties involved. For instance, a hypothetical: penguins exist in relative peace without the concern of many predators. Bears could conceivably feast on these birds, dwindling the population of penguins, causing the bears’ population to explode, and in turn starving the bears due to overpopulation and lack of food. It would be devastating for both species, and possibly others as well. Chain reactions are part of what’s causing the melting (solar-reflecting ice replaced by solar-absorbing water), and it definitely applies to ecosystems as well. Ecosystems are delicate and evolve over time with built in checks and balances — even small organisms can wreak havoc when thrown into one. Inserting a new species, especially a large predator, is something to do with great care. The sad truth is, as reports have said, polar bears may be extinct outside of zoos in within the century.
yes, but the penguins won’t like it.
The only they could survive is if their food supply moved there as well. Currently they would starve.
I guess they could eat the penguins instead of seals.
What is a cause you’re passionate about? Even if you’re not involved in it– what cause are you passionate about? What in the earth do you want to fix? Water conservation? Recycling? Polar bear saving (or animal extinction in general)? Ocean cleanup? Poverty awareness? Volunteer work? Natural disaster relief? It could be anything. Tell me why you’re passionate about it and what you do to help. It would be absolutely great if you could answer, because I think everyone has a little bit of them that really wants to help the world.
I’m passionate about helping animals. Why? Well, animals are just something a person loves. It’s adorable, cute, fun, playful. But most of all, it’s innocent. Animals are like babies; they don’t know about the world, they can’t tell what’s right from wrong. And when someone abuses them, well, that is just heart sickening, thinking that they could of done nothing, since they don’t know what’s right or wrong.(ex. a dog bites a human; he doesn’t know it was wrong, he was only trying to protect himself!)
I received a kidney and pancreas transplant in 2005, because a mom was kind enough at a time of great personal sorrow to allow her 14 year old son’s organs to be donated. So I am passionate about getting other people to donate and do volunteer work for that. It is discouraging when I read a news story like the one I read today; a 5 year old boy in Michican needed a heart, and died while waiting. Somewhere, there was a heart for that child. I know it means that another child dies to donate a heart to a child – but at least the donor family might have some healing and peace knowing that through donation, they kept up to 8 other families from going through the same heartache..
My passion is recycling. I go to great lengths to recycle everything I get my hands on that can be recycled, and I even convinced my old fashioned parents to start a compost pile and recycle.
which animals are near extinction? please type as many and if you know any good websites that would be great
i know that polar bears e.t.c are nearing extinction but any unusual ones? BEST ANSWER FOR FIRST ANSWER?? YES THANK YOU BT NAME ME SOME!!
There are loads and loads of animals nearing extinction or endangered. “With nearly a quarter of all mammal species and a third of amphibians threatened with extinction” this was from the World Wildlife Fund.
About 1/3 of the world’s amphibian species are endangered due to the chytrid fungus and pollution.
Hirola antelope (also called the four-eyed antelope due to its large preorbital glands) which is now entirely restricted to north-western Kenya. There are only about 1500 left. The vaquita is a tiny porpoise which lives in the Gulf of Mexico and there are no more than about 600 left, due to entanglement in fishing nets. The South China Tiger is thought to number no more than about 30. The Yangtze River Dolphin is possibly extinct, with few reliable sightings in the past ten years. The Sumatran Rhinoceros numbers few more than 60. There are only about 200 Siamese Crocodiles left in the wild. The Iberian Lynx is Europe’s most endangered mammal.
Polar Bear Extinction Question? What would happen if most of the polar bears died out. Im writing a paper on them possibly going extinct. So besides from the ecosystem going out of wack what else would happen
Most likely not much. Most biologist and ecologist pretty much agree, that the loss of one species wont effect much of anything else. Polar bear are not going extinct. They have not been put on any list. They are a species of concern due to the polar ice caps melting. Here is something most people don’t know. During the previous warm period, that would be the one that ended near the beginning of the last Ice Age, temperatures got warmer than they are now. Polar bear survived the last polar ice melt cause by that warming. There is no reason to believe they wont survive this one. There is something that is of concern. The shipping companies are discussing opening a sea lane through the Arctic Ocean. That could be a possible nightmare. Not only for polar bear, but for the whole Arctic system. Edit: I see someone just likes to go around giving people negative votes. If someone has an issue with my answer, then contact me, we will discuss it. Or perhaps the facts and truth are not acceptable. Perhaps that person prefers to live in ignorance.
actually, polar bears are a subspecies of grizzly bears. So they might loose that white coat and become griz, again (the ones that found their way back to land, anyhow). Uh after about half or more die… The idea of extinction is more about genetic erosion (fewer DNA gene pools mean more catastrophic population collapse than with myriad species)… So if something happens to the panda bear pop. then some other species can fill in that niche. Otherwise, bamboo might take over the world. See the permian extinction… there was fewer species and whatever caused the collapse killed off 80 to 90% of all ocean species and 70% of all land species. That’s a lot and it took five million years for the earth to recover–that’s a long time.
Other than the obvious loss of a species, the ecosystem is the biggest problem. No bears, more seals. More seals, less fish. and on and on it goes. It would take a long time to sort itself out (which it would)
what are we doing to help the the polar bears form getting extinction?
almost everyone likes polar bears and physically, we are doing nothing to save them. Polar Bears are drowning.
Survival of the fittest. If they can’t adapt.. they don’t deserve to continue. That’s the way nature works. But FYI they’re managing just fine, once again the “chicken little” enviro-nuts are picking are picking single area for use in their “proof of doom” The bears are doing just fine as a whole.
Male polar bears eat all the baby polar bears they can find which decimates the polar bear population! This appears to be part of their natural behavior. I don’t think we can change their natural behavior and make them stop this cannibalism!
The group Environmental Defense–of which I am a member as well as other animal protection coalitions/groups have an online petition campaign of email for the U.S. senators/other government leaders of the group who handle wilderness legislation. It is being voted and planned right now how to proceed with regulating Alaskan drilling and keeping the polar ice caps from melting too much and leaving the polar bears w/out ice floes which they use as jumping/standing platforms for finding food.
I don’t believe anything at all is being done. And even if there was a will to do something, we’d be at a loss to know what could be done that would work.
